If you are ever in a scenario whereby you want to quickly and easily transfer (import or export) an important file, such as your Contacts List (Address Book) file, from your apple mac to your mobile phone for example (or vice versa), but cannot because you don't have the usb cable to hand and/or don't know how to install the mobile phone's Desktop Manager software for example; then you might want to give Bluetooth a try as it requires no cables and no installation cd/dvd.
Bluetooth is a Wireless technology that is built-in to most modern computers and mobile phones these days, but its real worth is the fact that it doesn't rely on cables or a broadband connection to do its file transferring.....yet it still has a very decent transfer rate. In this section I am going to show you how to set up Bluetooth using an Apple Mac computer and a Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone in order to transfer a Contacts List (Address Book) file made in CSV (Coma Separated Values) text format.
Ignore the technicals of the CSV File, and even the File Transfer, at this stage because the point here is that by the time you have gone through this section you will know how easy it is to activate (set up/switch on) your Bluetooth devices. To begin with you need to go to System Preferences on your apple mac and click on the SHARING icon. From there you then need to make sure the settings (preferences) called BLUETOOTH SHARING and FILE SHARING are both switched ON (ticked) as they will enable you to transfer files to and from each bluetooth device.

For the next step you need to come out of the SHARING preference, by clicking on the SHOW ALL button (not shown here), and then click on the BLUETOOTH preference. Once you are inside the BLUETOOTH preference (window) make sure the ON and DISCOVERABLE settings (preferences) are both switched ON (ticked) as they will ensure that your apple mac bluetooth hardware is enabled and can be found by your mobile phone for example.

At this point also make sure your mobile phone is Switched ON and that you have its Bluetooth settings Switched ON (ticked). For the Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone you need to make sure both the BLUETOOTH and DISCOVERABLE bluetooth settings are Switched ON (ticked) - MENU >> SETTINGS >> WIRELESS AND NETWORKS >> BLUETOOTH SETTINGS >> BLUETOOTH and MENU >> SETTINGS >> WIRELESS AND NETWORKS >> BLUETOOTH SETTINGS >> DISCOVERABLE.
When you have all of the above set up, and are still viewing your apple mac's Bluetooth preferences (window), click on the SET UP NEW DEVICE button (above) to begin a search for your mobile phone's bluetooth hardware (device). In this example my apple mac will begin a search for my Samsung Galaxy Ace's bluetooth hardware (device) whereby it might find other peoples bluetooth hardware (devices) in the process.
Some bluetooth devices (i.e. mobile phones) are only searchable (discoverable) for 2 Minutes. If this is the case with your bluetooth device (i.e. mobile phone) you might have to re-tick (re-enable) its DISCOVERABLE setting again. Once the bluetooth device has been found, by your apple mac, you shouldn't have to keep re-enabling its DISCOVERABLE setting.

Bluetooth technology and bluetooth devices, as one, can generally be thought of as a Network; as they have similarities to a wireless network. In this example (above) my apple mac has found three bluetooth devices (networks) so far. However, because I have spotted my mobile phone within its findings (search results) I don't have to keep the search going; even though the whole search process is implying there is more to be done (more bluetooth devices to be found). All I need to do now is select my mobile phone from the search results and then click on the CONTINUE button. Doing so will then display a unique number.

That unique number is used as a 'Connection Identifier' between the two bluetooth devices (a bit like a Wireless Network Key). The same number will be displayed on your bluetooth device (i.e. mobile phone) whereby you need to make sure it matches the one display on your apple mac (above) before accepting the connection between the two bluetooth devices. In other words, you will see the same number on your mobile phone whereby you are asked to confirm that it is the same number being displayed on your apple mac before the two bluetooth devices are allowed to connect to each other. Once you are happy that this connection is okay click on the CONTINUE button to proceed.
On some mobile phones you just need to confirm the numbers match by clicking on a couple of YES buttons, but with older mobile phones you sometimes have to enter the Unique number before continuing. It depends on the mobile phone you are using and its bluetooth manufacturer settings.
In this example I am happy that both numbers match and therefore allow the connection to go ahead between my mobile phone and my apple mac computer (by clicking on the CONTINUE button). This connection process is known as Pairing (matching) two bluetooth devices. Once this connection has been made the apple mac and mobile phone will both remember their Pairing (connection) settings for any future connections. So if you want to connect the two devices again, on another day for example, you could do so without the need of the above connection (pairing) process. All that's left to do now is click on the QUIT button (below) to proceed to begin a Transfer session.

At this point it appears as if the two bluetooth devices are Not Connected (below), which technically they are not, but as soon as you initiate a File Transfer the connected status changes to Connected (Fig 1.6 below).
To initiate a File Transfer you can either send/share a file from your mobile phone to your apple mac or click on the BROWSE DEVICE (or SEND FILE) button located on the COG WHEEL drop-down menu of the apple mac Bluetooth window (Fig 1.5 below). In this example I'm going to send a file from my apple mac to my mobile phone using the BROWSE DEVICE method, so i will now click on the COG WHEEL drop-down menu and select the BROWSE DEVICE menu-item.

By clicking on the BROWSE DEVICE menu-item you "wake-up" the bluetooth device you are connecting to, in this example my Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone, which works in a similar way to a television coming out of Standby or a computer being woken up from Sleep Mode. Hence why the connection status changes to Connected.

Clicking on the BROWSE DEVICE menu-item also opens up a Browse window that allows you to browse through the folders and files of the bluetooth device your apple mac is connected to. Again, in this example my Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone. Hence the name: BROWSE DEVICE. This means you can upload (send) files to your mobile phone as well as download files from it onto your apple mac.
On the Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone, and other Samsung mobile phones, you need to make each file viewable via bluetooth before it can be viewed in the Browse window's folder-preview pane. Go to the file of your choice, on your mobile phone, and then tap the MENU button and then on the MORE option. This will then give you the BLUETOOTH VISIBILITY option whereby you then select which file(s) you want visible via bluetooth - Tap on the bluetooth icon next to each file.
In this example I'm going to send the Contacts.csv file located on my apple mac's desktop screen to the OTHER FILES folder located on my mobile phone. To do this I need to double click on the OTHER FILES folder from within the Browse window's folder-preview pane.

With the OTHER FILES folder opened in the folder-preview pane of the Browse window I can now drag my Contacts.csv file, from my apple mac's desktop screen, into that OTHER FILES folder. Doing so will physically upload (send) the Contacts.csv file from my apple mac's desktop screen to the OTHER FILES folder located on my mobile phone.

NOTE - If the file has been sent successfully but you cannot see it, depending on your mobile phone settings, you may need to change the file's bluetooth visibility from your mobile phone; which is the case with the Samsung Galaxy Ace - You will need to manually change the file's bluetooth visibility as described above.

The BROWSE DEVICE method is ideal for easily uploading (sending) and downloading (receiving) multiple files to/from a folder of your choice using the drag technique. However, if you just want to upload (send) a file to your mobile phone's BLUETOOTH folder you can use the SEND FILE method instead. It doesn't allow downloading, only uploading (sending) - That is the difference between BROWSE DEVICE and SEND FILE.
To send a file to your mobile phone's BLUETOOTH folder begin by clicking on the COG WHEEL drop-down menu and then select the SEND FILE menu-item. Doing so will bring up the 'Select File To Send' file requester (Fig 1.12 below) whereby you need to navigate it to the file you want to send.

In this example I have navigated the file requester to a folder called PHOTOS, that resides on my apple mac, and then selected the John.jpg file. With that file selected I am now going to click on the SEND button - This will send the John.jpg file from the PHOTOS folder on my apple mac to the BLUETOOTH folder on my Samsung Galaxy Ace mobile phone.

After clicking on the SEND button a series of progress bars (gauges) appear, and quickly disappear, to denote the file is being transferred and then has been transferred.

Finished! That is how you set up bluetooth and transfer a file. One final thing to note here - When you are transferring (sending) files from your mobile phone to your apple mac those files will be placed inside (downloaded to) your DOWNLOADS folder.
